A dose of dignity: North Dakota program gives free care to low-income kids without looking like a handout

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Dakota is providing primary and preventive health care to children of low-income families free of charge with its new Caring Program for Children. The program insures children whose families earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but do not earn enough to pay for health insurance. The North Dakota Blues set up Caring councils throughout the state to provide referrals, outreach and education to families who might otherwise not consider accepting charitable assistance.

Portland, OR-based law firm, Klarquist Sparkman Campbell Leigh and Whinston, has decreased its health care costs every year between 1992 and 1996. It introduced a wellness program provided by Nashville, TN-based Gordian Health Solutions which focuses on smoking and obesity. Employees are not charged for health insurance if they remain tobacco free and weigh no more than 1.2 times their ideal weight. Participation is 90%.

Long-term scare
Article Abstract:
Little attention has been paid to Medicaid reimbursement costs to nursing homes, although it will grow as the US population gets older. In 1995 the federal government spent only $36 bil for nursing home costs under the Medicaid program, and seniors must consider other options. Continuing care amd assisted living are two possibilities. Long-term care insurance is another, but many will find the policies far too expensive.
