A note on entry by small hospitals

Article Abstract:

Fourteen of the 20 general acute care hospitals that have recently opened in California have fewer than 100 beds, while 18 of them have fewer than 200 beds. This challenges the assumptions that small hospitals realize economies of scale only beyond 200 beds, and that hospitals with less than 100 beds are highly inefficient. The factors that may have led to the assumption that 100-bed hospitals cannot realize economies of scale are discussed.
