Assisted suicide: is there a future? Ethical and nursing considerations

Article Abstract:

Nurses need to join the debate over physician-assisted suicide. The chief issues involved include: pain and suffering; quality of life; patient autonomy; and the common good. Professionals who assist in patient suicide risk reversing their roles from preservers of life to administrators of death. The American Medical and American Nursing Associations have opposed physician-assisted suicide. The nurse's role needs to emphasize providing all possible comfort and helping patients understand their suffering.
