Beyond tech assessment: balancing needs, strategy

Article Abstract:

University Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital and Medical Center, and St Vincent Hospital and Medical Center in Portland, Oregon, are mediating their dispute over organ transplant provision. Hospital administrators and three members of the Oregon Health Resources Commission seek to define a joint transplant program. A successful agreement could control transplant costs and merge the financial needs of health-care providers and insurers to the benefit of the community. The negotiation process, if fruitful, could be used to resolve similar disputes in other states.

Hospitals move toward image management, but pace is slow

Article Abstract:

Hospitals are taking steps toward developing picture archiving and communications systems (PACS), which develop, store, view and distribute diagnostic images from a variety of sources. For example, Christian Health Services Inc installed a $600,000 teleradiology network to connect three affiliate hospitals with their largest facility. It is hoped that PACS will lead to filmless radiology departments linked to hospital voice and data systems, but radiologists and imaging experts agree that such systems will not be realized for five to 10 years.

Regional waste pact has layers of dividends

Article Abstract:

A waste management program designed by the Greater Houston Hospital Council helps 30 Houston, TX, area hospitals better manage their biomedical waste. A group waste disposal contract with ECCOR Inc reduced the costs of disposing of waste for one area hospital from 35 cents per lb to 26 cents per lb, saving the hospital $57,000 in one year. ECCOR is buying another waste management company, and the acquisition will allow Houston area hospitals to ship their wastes to an instate site.
