Bracing for survival

Article Abstract:

Materiel managers face tight promotion and opportunities for employment as downsizing and consolidation in health care support services continue. In order to succeed materiel managers must be flexible and willing to accept the challenges posed by changes, and consider them as chances to improve their personal and professional growth. To remain employed, materiel managers must be ready to face reengineering, networks, and outsourcing in the health care industry by identifying market forces and developing a personal strategy to overcome them.

Reusable linens in the surgery

Article Abstract:

Technological advances combined with rising costs and environmental concerns have caused many hospitals to switch from disposable to reusable surgical linens. The development of softer and more repellent fabrics have enabled reusable gowns and drapes to offer the same protection and product consistency previously found only in disposable linens. The advent of these high quality fabrics have made hospitals use reusable linens in place of disposable products to reduce costs and minimize waste production.

Switching back to reusable underpads

Article Abstract:

Reusable underpads is a better alternative to disposable ones. A trial evaluation conducted at Orlando Regional Medical Center and the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Women showed that nurses and patients preferred using underpads that are reusable. Not only do they keep costs down, reusable pads are more absorbent and more comfortable compared to the disposable ones commonly used in most hospitals.
