Building blocks: is there a difference between a hospital designed to care for the sick and one designed to keep people well?

Article Abstract:

A panel of senior healthcare executives and design/construction experts agreed that the nature of hospital services is rapidly evolving and changing hospitals' infrastructure needs as well. With health care moving from inpatient care to ambulatory care combined with wellness initiatives, hospital facilities need to be more flexible and not centered on the operating room. One CEO noted that his new hospital had seven multiple-entry points, allowing patients to receive in one place all the care required by a particular condition or disease.

Healthscapes: the importance of place

Article Abstract:

'Healthscapes' is term that best describes the effect the physical attributes of a healthcare institution have on patient perceptions of quality of care. Facilities design is a crucial component of marketing in a service-oriented industry, yet many healthcare administrators ignore it. This function is so important that they should consider incorporating it into the executive hierarchy.

Competing for patients and profit; analytical framework can help marketers determine the competitive strengths and weaknesses of hospitals

Article Abstract:

An importance-performance analysis can provide a competitive analysis of hospitals. The strengths and weaknesses of a hospital will be determined by what a consumer considers important attributes for a hospital and, consequently, how a hospital is rated according to these attributes. Hospital survival is being based upon utilization rates in 1996, not operational efficiency.
