CEO's guide to health care information systems

Article Abstract:

Health care chief executives should be aware of seven mistaken assumptions about information technology and systems. The truth is that information systems require planning; are justifiable investments; are inexpensive to analyze; do not necessitate the latest technology; offer more than data processing; are useful for physicians and other providers; and often need more than a simple modification to handle additional tasks.

Members of the so-called Generation X have different attitudes, work ethics, and basic skills than their precedessors, and while these differences may seem negative at first they can prove to be among a healthcare company's greatest assets. Generation Xers are empowered, preferring to work in a self-directed way to achieve clear tasks; techno-literate and quick to learn new software programs; and flexible.

Software that plays hardball; expert clinical systems fend off forgetfulness, mistakes and fraud investigations

Article Abstract:

Doctors belonging to Partners Healthcare System air being tremendously aided in carrying out their duties by an integrated computer system that utilizes expert software. The software checks medication orders against the known allergies of patients and to potential drug conflicts and if there are problems issues an alert. It also performs a variety of other tasks.
