CEOs in the 1990s: executive careers will focus on interpersonal skills

Article Abstract:

A survey on the relationships between CEOs, trustees and medical staff leaders in the health care industry has been completed through a joint effort by the American Medical Assn, American Hospital Assn and the American College of Healthcare Executives. The survey asked about CEO turnover rates and whether medical staff presidents receive detailed orientations from their predecessors and from the CEO. The survey revealed that a high level of continuity in senior management contributed significantly to higher operating profits at hospitals and health care organizations.

Roberts: restructuring the system will benefit all

Article Abstract:

Carolyn C. Roberts, recently chosen chairwoman-elect of the American Hospital Assn (AHA) board of trustees, feels that the AHA's medical care restructuring plan will return the focus of the health care system to the patient. Assigning various services to particular institutions can help them survive difficult economic times. Although an emphasis on quality control and replacing the competitive approach may reduce revenues, marketing can identify unmet service needs to compensate.

Multiculturalism is the future

Article Abstract:

The US population is becoming increasingly multiracial, and this will be reflected in the ethnic mix of both health care workers and their patients. While the industry has demonstrated that it can handle a diverse patient population, the challenge lies in whether or not health care workers will be adequately educated and trained. Hospitals must involve themselves in the local education system to ensure that future employees are properly prepared.
