Article Abstract:

Health care companies and information technology specialists desire to develop a comprehensive system to maintain and provide access to computerized patient records. Such a system that electronic stores and retrieves a patient's entire medical care has long been the promise of health care IT, but the promise is growing more remote as hospitals and systems vendors deal with the realities of the cost of technology investments.

Article Abstract:

People in the United States tend to believe that a competitive free market can solve most economic problems, including the high price of health care. After measures that increased competition in the industry, health insurance premiums slowed down for a few years, but they are rising again. Also, some health maintenance organizations lost money in 1997, after a period of spiraling profits.

The health care 100

Article Abstract:

The health care 100 lists the top 100 integrated health systems in the US. The range of the health care facilities includes companies with $112 million to $4.5 billion in revenues, with five to 300 units and with 5,000 patients to 2.5 million patients. The list has changed considerably from 1996 to 1997 and many of these systems are consolidating.
