The balancing breed

Article Abstract:

Some hospitals are saving money by having physician specialists, known as hospitalists, take responsibility for inpatient care from family doctors. With the use of hospitalists, the average patient stay declined by a day at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MA, and by half a day at Park Nicollet Clinic in Minneapolis, MN. However, members of the American Academy of Family Physicians argue that the approach screens primary care doctors from their patients and forces the patients to accept physicians they don't know.
