Can ethical management and managed care coexist?

Article Abstract:

Serious ethical questions are being raised in view of the growth of profit-oriented managed-care orientations. The term 'business ethics' is widely considered to be an oxymoron since businesses are generally believed to focus primarily on maximizing profit. A number of frameworks have been developed to serve as guidelines for the moral and ethical practice of business management. One of these, an agent-morality-oriented model, is proposed as a framework for addressing ethical issues in managed care.

Governance of integrated delivery systems/networks: a stakeholder approach

Article Abstract:

A two-tiered governance model composed of overarching and facilitating boards can align the needs of both internal and external stakeholders of integrated delivery systems/networks. The overarching board ideally consists of inside and outside directors, while the facilitating board consists of managerial representatives from hospitals, medical groups and health plans. The tow-tiered model is more preferable than the community and corporate models of governance.

Urban-rural hospital affiliations: assessing control, fit, and stakeholder issues strategically

Article Abstract:

Rural hospitals are forming urban affiliations to survive increasing financial pressure. These serve as both marketing mechanisms and referral sources for urban hospitals. This business perspective underscores the role of stakeholders and leads to a classification of urban-rural hospital affiliations based on the concepts of organizational control and fit. Four case studies and four generic strategies for forming affiliations are presented.
