Can managed care deflect the Congressional budget ax?

Article Abstract:

Republicans in Congress seem determined to cut Medicare funding to help balance the budget and reduce the deficit. Health Care Financing Administration officials suggest an option for Medicare recipients to join preferred provider organizations similar to a demonstration program now operating in 15 states. Other options include offering seniors vouchers for a specific amount of money for medical care. The American Hospital Assn and Group Health Assn of America are lobbying to expand the choices available.

Is there a cure for Medicare's outpatient payment pains?

Article Abstract:

The US Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) is expected to release its report on establishing prospective payments for outpatient services for Medicare recipients. A simplified payment system will reduce the administrative complexities involved with Medicare outpatient services, and it is hoped that a unified system will reduce distortions in the delivery of medical services. Politics and health care reform debates have slowed HCFA action on this issue.
