Switching to managed care in the small employer market

Article Abstract:

The health insurance market witnessed a remarkable increase in managed care products among small private business enterprises, as revealed by a telephone survey conducted on small employers between 1993 and 1995. Results suggest that the rise of consumer familiarity regarding health insurance was crucial in the growth of managed care premiums not only in large-scale business operations but also in small ventures and communities. During the period examined, it was found that the conventional insurance coverage dropped from 73% to 30%.

The utilization of BHP services during the first two years was relatively stable. New members who did not have insurance for more than a year have higher total expenditures compared with those who did not have insurance for less than one year or to those who had never availed of any insurance plan.
