Experts: Hospitals overdoing sterile supply procedure

Article Abstract:

Hospital consultants claim it is not always necessary to remove sterile supplies from containers or separate them from other supplies. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations standards include discarding cartons that show signs of soil or infestation. Storage and distribution functions can be consolidated to save space and facilitate inventory and handling functions, provided standards of good housekeeping are followed.

Idling hospital's incinerator requires a look at other disposal options

Article Abstract:

Managers of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, given the option of spending $2 million on updating its incinerator or closing it, appointed a committee to consider alternatives. The prospect of changing environmental regulations caused the group to adopt California standards for clean air. The decision was made to shut down the incinerator and participate in a joint contract through Voluntary Hospitals of America to hire waste haulers.
