Cancer at the crossroads: what the onset of the biotech generation will mean for hospitals

Article Abstract:

Biotechnology research in progress is expected to change the treatment of cancer by using tumor-specific drugs that enable the body's immune system to destroy targetted cancer cells. Hospitals should plan oncology programs to be ready when the baby boom generation reaches 50 in 1996. Plans should include comprehensive services or access to cooperating institutions that provide a combination of preventive care, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up for the growing number of cancer patients and survivors.

TQM shifts hospital-vendor focus to total value, productivity

Article Abstract:

Some hospitals and hospital suppliers and vendors are increasingly using total quality management (TQM) principles to increase productivity and control rising medical costs. For example, Baton Rouge General aims to cut its logistical costs by reducing the number of its vendors. In addition, Tucson Medical Center and ServiceMaster Co use a 'patient service associate' program to cross-train workers to deliver a broad variety of services. Additional cost-cutting programs are described.

Holding networks together: shared information will be glue for reformed health system

Article Abstract:

Shared community health information network systems are essential to the success of managed competition and other health care reform proposals. Sharing outcomes data will allow hospitals to improve health care procedures by identifying problem areas in the network. Computer-based paper record systems will enable community health organizations to disseminate data, text, voice and medical images throughout the health network.
