Do new prescription drugs pay for themselves? The case of second generation antipsychotics

Article Abstract:

Consumer spending on prescription drugs in United States has increased tremendously. This trend is due to the increased preference of newer drugs. Research done on antipsychotic drugs to know if this drug spending has reduced the demand for hospitalizations and other health care services indicates that this trend has not influenced the other kinds of medical care.

A model, which studies the pharmaceutical manufacturers' behavior competing with parallel imports firms of European Union in home market and the influence of parallel imports on prices of drugs in Sweden is analyzed.
