Uncovered-and unfazed

Article Abstract:

Members of the Amish culture, especially the self-employed, pay their medical bills in cash and forgoe health insurance. Health coverage, in this unique culture and religion, is shown as a lack of faith. They take financial obligations seriously as a community, and together work to pay bills for themselves and others. Not dealing with insurance has made it so much easier for the doctors that they give the Amish a discount on treatment rates.

Every dollar counts; in an Alabama program, patients invest in the quality of their 'free' care

Article Abstract:

Eastern Health System of Birmingham, Alabama has launched a program that puts a completely different slant on free health care by requiring patients to invest in the quality of care they receive. The insurance-style program stipulates that patients must contribute whatever they can afford, no matter how small. It is hoped that this approach will help to remove some of the stigma associated with free health care services.
