Legal issues in neonatal nursing

Article Abstract:

Several important strategies can help reduce the risk of complications with newborns and subsequent legal action. Adequate and appropriate supplies for resuscitation should be immediately available at birth and throughout the nursery. Infants should be closely monitored for signs of any distress and all procedures should be thoroughly documented. The infant's parents need to be properly informed of all invasive procedures and provide consent.

Supporting parents during and after a pregnancy subsequent to a perinatal loss

Article Abstract:

Neonatal and perinatal nurses can provide crucial mental and emotional support to parents undergoing another pregnancy after suffering a perinatal loss. Although studies show that subsequent pregnancies are significantly stressful to couples, insufficient research has been done to adequately address the concerns and needs of these couples. By providing support, nurses can help direct this research and implement changes in practice.

Risk management issues in the perinatal setting

Article Abstract:

Decreasing the risk factors at and around delivery may reduce the risk for malpractice lawsuits. Important considerations include carefully monitoring women in labor and thoroughly documenting all procedures performed. Nursing staff should frequently review and update their facilities' guidelines and procedures including what conditions should warrant immediately notifying appropriate staff members.
