The movement toward vertically integrated regional health systems

Article Abstract:

Vertically integrated regional health systems are the wave of the future owing to their cost-effectiveness. Competition in the future is seen among major regional systems, and not between individual institutions, in the delivery of health care services. This more beneficial system will have as its main features access, effectiveness, efficiency, appropriateness, quality and service. Several barriers, however, must still be overcome. These are the Federal Trade Commission, hospital and physician autonomy, the patient and resistance to the resource-based relative value scale.

Private hospital care for profit? A reappraisal

Article Abstract:

Private not-for-profit (NFP) hospitals were evaluated in the light of their original role as tax-exempt charity institutions. An analytic comparison between for-profit, investor-owned (IO) hospitals and NFP was also made in terms of pursuit of profit, mortality rate and quality of care. Based on intensive research, it was found out that both NFP and IO hospitals are profit-oriented and there is no significant difference between the quality of care and mortality rate in both hospitals.
