Article Abstract:

Home health care is a large and growing industry with about 18,000 agencies from small new operators to large corporations. Many were started by hospitals as a way of covering overhead costs under the generous Medicare and Medicaid payment scheme for home care. However, the system is expected to change to a managed care format with capitated prepayment for services. The industry is preparing for the change through cost-cutting efforts, consolidation and partnerships.
