Houston: Texas-sized restructuring in a New York minute

Article Abstract:

The health care delivery system in Houston, TX, is changing rapidly toward managed care. Typical in this competitive market is the increased demand for primary care physicians, who can command salaries that begin at $150,000 a year. Some physicians are establishing their own group practices to obtain control over the risks of their profession. Additionally, at least two hospital-based networks will be established to help meet the healthcare needs of some 3.5 million people. The effect of the changing healthcare market in Houston, including the effect on indigent care, is detailed.

A piece of the action

Article Abstract:

The healthcare industry is currently focusing on monetary issues rather than quality care issues, as was predicted and feared when the concept of managed care first began to spread. Healthcare providers should follow the foward-looking principles of such successful models as VISA and Group Health Cooperative. These companies use local flexibility to carry out national visions and take demographic changes into account.

Milwaukee: three hospital systems lead the way to integration in 'Brew City.'

Article Abstract:

Managed care and integration are growing rapidly in Milwaukee, WI's health care system. About a third of residents are covered by a managed care plan, and the area's pro-business environment, stable economy and nearness to Chicago indicate potential for growth. Three hospital-based systems are leaders in the integration movement: Aurora Health Care, Covenant Health Care and Horizon Healthcare.
