How to steer clear of fraud and abuse

Article Abstract:

Hospital administrators may expect to wait for interpretation of the recently-passed Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act by the Office of the Inspector General of the Dept of Health & Human Services. The waiting period will probably exceed the proposed 60-day limit on answering such questions as possible fraud and abuse in the terms of hospital joint ventures with doctors, for example. Some healthcare professionals fear the new law, which provides higher fines for Medicare and Medicaid fraud.

Pay-block time: primary care practices became the decade's hot properties, thanks to managed care. Salaries soared - but what escalates must moderate

Article Abstract:

Primary care physicians had raises of 7.5% per year during the early 1990s due to major increases in health plan enrollments which decreased to 1.4% in 1996. Specialists also had high salaries during the early 1990s but an overabundance in certain specialties and lower payments by health insurance companies caused a decrease in salaries. Physicians' salaries have stabilized in the late 1990s.
