The Great Lakes debate

Article Abstract:

There is concern about the proposed consolidation of the Department of Veterans Affairs' medical centers in Chicago, IL. The Westside Medical Center is located in the inner city, takes care of 40,000 patients annually and is affiliated with the largest college of medicine in the US, the University of Illinois at Chicago. The Lakeside Medical Center is located in the expensive Gold Coast neighborhood, takes care of 21,000 patients annually and is affiliated with Northwestern University Medical School.

Article Abstract:

The Grinnell Regional Medical Center offers several services to help patients and customers get access to the healthcare services and tools which they need. As part of the American Hospital Assn's Campaign for Coverage, Grinnell provides a HealthRide van for patients who cannot travel to the facility. The center also has a Loan Closet program to get medical equipment to the needy.

Of bugs and drugs: as microbes get tougher to kill, research focuses on designing lethal weapons

Article Abstract:

The overuse of antibiotics has resulted in the development of staph and bacteria that resist treatment. There will be an increase in deaths, treatment costs and liability suits. Surgery will also become more risky as staph strains resist eradication. Drug synthesis may not be imminent but hospitals can prepare for better infection control.
