Several hospitals are taking steps to ensure that patients are well served by their facilities. The Women's Pavilion at Milford-Whitinsville Regional Hospital in Massachusetts has implemented the advanced breast biopsy instrumentation system that can perform biopsies in an hour or less 80 percent of the time, compared to the six hours required by traditional methods. Sharp Mission Park Medical Group in Oceanside, CA, uses a customer service system called Making Your Mark to analyze systems and streamline medical processes. HMO PacifiCare of California began posting clinical, administrative and service results from its largest medical groups on a web site in Sep 1998.

The merger of Medlantic Healthcare Group, based in Washington, DC, and Helix Health, in Baltimore, MD, was facilitated because the heads of both institutions, John McDaniel and Michael Merson, had worked together for 30 years. McDaniel is now ceo of Helix/Medlantic, the newly formed entity, which includes hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, outpatient surgical centers and home health services.
