Toward healthier hospitals

Article Abstract:

Hospital administration problems such as unclear and ineffective mission statements, divisiveness of efforts, difficulties of supplementing external advocacy with internal reconciliation in the senior manager's job as well as the lack of open communication with board members can be surmounted provided hospital staff undertake a change in mindset. Effecting lasting and genuine change is possible not through a rearrangement of authority but rather through specific actions geared toward improving personal responsibility.

Article Abstract:

Clinical costing is evaluated based on isolated treatment costs (ITC) of specific diseases. Activity-based costing, which are based on uncomplicated treatments, provides inaccurate costing values leading to inefficient control of clinical finances. Although the integration of ITC in the costing system would improve its effectiveness, such integration would require separate cost evaluation of the different clinical disciplines involve in treating complicated diseases.

Developing successful performance appraisals through choosing appropriate words to effectively describe work

Article Abstract:

Health care managers should take a number of steps when developing performance appraisals. These include ensuring that the process has the support of administrators, determining whether the performance appraisal system will be created by a single person or committee and adopting basic program planning techniques. Performance appraisals should also be conducted as a formal activity involving the supervisor and employee.
