Information systems and strategic management

Article Abstract:

Hospitals traditionally use information systems to facilitate their financial, patient and administrative support functions. However, hospital administrators are starting to realize that information systems are also useful for strategic planning and strategy development and implementation. Despite the growing recognition of information systems' importance in hospital administration, there is little evidence that shows the effective use of information systems by hospitals. Applications of information systems within the context of three strategic planning frameworks are presented.

Pure versus hybrid: performance implications of Porter's generic strategies

Article Abstract:

Creating a sustainable competitive advantage depends on a company's ability to adapt its strategies and the character of the organization to an evolving market. Porter's generic strategies may be used either in their pure or hybrid forms. Some hospitals have thrived by concentrating on a cost leadership strategy while others applied a hybrid form where cost leadership was complemented by differentiation. Either form works provided the hospital is able to adapt its products and services relative to its competitors.

Strategic planning in hospitals: a review and proposal

Article Abstract:

Hospitals have been encouraged to adopt strategic planning techniques to increase their efficiency. However, there is no proof that hospitals which have adopted strategic planning are more efficient than those which have not used the method. To address these problems, issues surrounding the implementation of strategic planning in hospitals are presented.
