Knockin' on heaven's door

Article Abstract:

The issue of doctor-assisted suicide is taking a high public profile because the Supreme Court is going to examine its legal aspects. Managed care companies are likely to come under public scrutiny regarding their policies for the treatment of terminally ill, suffering patients. The public may assume the worst about managed care, given reports about quick discharges of new mothers and mastectomy patients. Managed care firms should openly explain their policies.

Image problems

Article Abstract:

Consumers, journalists and corporate leaders do not have any faith in the managed health care system. A survey of 2,000 business executives found that a high/moderate opinion of health insurance was held by only 32%. On a list ranking 25 industries, the health care industry ranked 24th, just above the tobacco industry. Managed care executives need to let people know that the industry is about more than just making money.

As good as it gets?

Article Abstract:

Managed care companies were vilified in the movie 'As Good As It Gets,' starring Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson. Hunt's character rants against the perceived evils of managed care for failing to treat her son effectively. Managed care companies should be very concerned about the high level of dissatisfaction that consumer associate with health plans when considering their quality of care issues.
