Linking their futures: hospitals and physicians meet challenges posed by PHOs

Article Abstract:

Hospitals are finding it to their advantage to create physician/hospital organizations (PHOs) that benefit the hospitals, the doctors and their communities by forming alliances that strengthen hospital/doctor relationships. The formation process can be time consuming, and the issues of most concern to all parties are likely to be trust and the sharing of control. Trust issues can be handled by an equitable mix on the governing board. There are a number of ways to set up a PHO to maximize its capabilities.

What PHOs know

Article Abstract:

Newer physician-hospital organizations (PHO) can learn valuable organization and management techniques from established PHOs. Restricting physician panels and establishing capitated payment systems are two areas where older PHOs can offer expertise. Issues of trust and control are central to the establishment of successful joint ventures between physicians and hospitals.

Will super PHOs save the day?

Article Abstract:

Super physician-hospital-organizations (PHOs) can help hospitals compete in the new health care environment, but there are drawbacks. Super PHOs can bring about power struggle problems, for they should be able to negotiate contracts before individual PHOs get the chance. Those hospitals managing PHOs should decide what responsibilities they should have.
