Look Ma, no wires!

Article Abstract:

John Muir Medical Center Inc, Walnut Creek, CA, uses a wireless local area network (LAN) system to automate and simplify the handling of patient data. John Muir Medical Center was able to save a significant amount of money for the system by purchasing off-the-shelf software and hardware, instead of acquiring a proprietary system. For example, the total cost for transmitters was $2,000 to $3,000 for an off-the-shelf system versus $8,000 to $11,000 for a proprietary system.

How a heartache began

Article Abstract:

A nurse at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, WA, accidentally dropped a donated human hear into a sink while preparing it for shipment and the falsified documents to cover up the fact that she disposed of the heart. The incident should have been reported immediately by the nurse, who was new to that department. She had been tired and panicked. The incident was discovered, and the hospital discussed it openly for the sake of maintaining public confidence.
