MRI's second chance

Article Abstract:

Sales of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment, which grew to more than $1 billion in the US in 1992, fell to $550 million in 1994. Also, the average charge for services dropped to about $600 from a high of almost $1,000. Economic strictures of health reform legislation and managed care programs are credited with slowing growth of this expensive but useful diagnostic tool. Radiological Associates, a Sacramento, CA, group, developed a Utilization Management System to prevent unnecessary use of MRI.
