Managed care expands in the healthcare universe sector remains concentrated

Article Abstract:

The market size of the managed care plans is presented. The rankings of the largest managed care organizations are discussed. While the largest managed care organization's chain is Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, a federation of forty one independent, locally operated plans, the largest nonprofit managed care organization is Kaiser Permanente with more than 8.3 million members, and the largest publicly traded managed care organization's is the UnitedHealth Group Inc with 20.3 million members.

The managed care organization (MCO) has the top 10 companies, which account for more than half of the total health maintenance organization (HMO) in the United States. Wellpoint and Anthem have announced plans to merge and may become the largest MCO.

One must consider the terms of membership, provider contracts and location when looking at a managed care company. The medical loss ratio, administrative expense and interest expense should also be taken into account.
