Management education for nurses: hospital executives' opinions and hiring practices

Article Abstract:

Hospital CEOs and CNOs generally agree that the joint MSN/MBA degree offers that best training for nurses in hospital management but expressed varied attitudes on individual educational requirements, opportunities or preferences for nurses in management. Eighty eight urban, non-government hospital executives replied to a survey of hiring practices. At least 14% of nurses in non-government hospitals have managerial positions but only a low percentage of these have advanced degrees or supervisory training.

The consequences of disclosure: one hospital's response to the presence of an HIV-positive physician

Article Abstract:

Hospitals face a difficult situation when they employ physicians who are HIV-positive or who have AIDS. The results of one hospital's response to the presence of an emergency room physician who had AIDS is presented to show the consequences of disclosure. The hospital disclosed the physician's condition, and with the cooperation of the physician, provided counseling and HIV testing for patients. The case is of relevance to healthcare providers forging their own disclosure policies.

The hospital as provider and employer: the case of AIDS

Article Abstract:

Hospitals, as providers of healthcare services, face a larger responsibility protecting the rights of HIV-infected employees or employees with AIDS than do regular employers. As well as safeguarding the rights of their employees, hospitals must also safeguard the health of patients. Protecting patients from unnecessary risks while respecting the rights of HIV-positive employees is difficult as the two aims often are contradictory.
