Medical Record Work Standards: Some Practical Aspects

Article Abstract:

The Medical Records Services at the City of Hope National Medical Center is organized into the functional units of medical transcription, record completion, coding-billing, record retention and microfilming, correspondence and disability and record processing. The number of loose reports has proven to be a useful indicator of workload. In order to complete the process of developing standards, report processing times and standards must be determined. Practical applications of work standards include employee training, probation, evaluation and discipline. Generally, the concept of work standards has been well accepted by the employees since it gives them instant feedback of job performance.

Managing A Filing System Conversion

Article Abstract:

Increasing volume mandates that record storage space be used efficiently. Patient records at the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio were filed using a straight numeric filing system. This filing method requires a large amount of space. Three other numeric filing systems, middle digit, terminal digit, and skip numbering, would significantly reduce the amount of required floor space. The Medical Information Systems Department changed their record filing system from straight numeric to a terminal digit filing system. This conversion was completed over a four week period. Several flow charts and tables are used to illustrate the project.
