Managing the participatory-style meeting

Article Abstract:

Organizational Dynamics Inc CEO George Labovitz favors a participatory management style. Participatory management is most effective when a manager doesn't know the answer, wants commitment and consensus, or wants to manage change. Participatory-style meetings need clearly defined objectives, even agendas. To orchestrate such a meeting, Labovitz suggests keeping the meeting focused, practicing effective listening, ensuring common knowledge of information being used, and giving roles such as 'information gatherer' or 'topic specialist' to participants.

Survey shows gaps in competencies of new RNs

Article Abstract:

Registered nurses who have recently graduated may lack skills needed for hospital nursing, according to a survey by Virginia Hospital Assn's Health Manpower Resource Center. Hospitals expect nurses to think critically and to communicate with patients and physicians. However, directors of nursing programs suggest hospitals take steps including continued training of newly graduated nurses and communication with nursing schools about possible changes in curriculum.
