Predicting the unpredictable

Article Abstract:

Most health care administrators are attempting to create a linked network of doctors, hospitals, and services, and a number of strategies are being used successfully. Hospitals attempting to dominate a region through size alone will have trouble beating flexible competition, and can expect further consolidation. Columbia/HCA has managed to dominate in Florida and perhaps Atlanta, by defining themselves as a powerhouse within a small market, mostly through acquisition. Hospices and other niche-market players can find strength in partnerships as well.

The running of the bulls; in which the raging stock market transforms health care

Article Abstract:

Health care stocks outpaced the Dow Jones Industrial Average from Jan 1995 through early Mar 1996. The Morgan Stanley Healthcare Provider Index rose 47.8%, whereas the Dow rose 42.9%. Although health care stocks do not always trade with the Dow or other broad market indices, the bull market provides a good environment for health care stocks. Initial public offerings, mergers and pooling of interest transactions fueled the equities markets.

Street scenes

Article Abstract:

Talks between Columbia/HCA Healthcare and executives from eight public and not-for-profit healthcare organizations about acquiring 22 Columbia hospitals dissect with reports of a Chicago hospital's refusal to assist a fatally wounded youth dying 35 ft from the hospital. The healthcare industry must bear some of the blame for the public's perception that the industry is an uncaring entity.
