Mission statement rationales and organizational alignment in the not-for-profit health care sector

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted on the application of mission statements by not-for-profit health care organizations to find out if there is a connection between the initial reasons for establishing a mission statement and hospital performance. Results showed that some of the reasons for making a mission statement are more significant than others and that the adjustment of the organization's focus with respect to the mission statement is essential both for the success of the mission statement and the hospital.

Participation as a complicating mechanism: the effect of clinical professional and middle manager participation on hospital performance

Article Abstract:

The complication introduced by the participation of clinical professionals and middle managers in strategic decision-making as measured through hospital costs and strategic complexity was investigated through a survey. Findings showed that performance benefits were due to the participation of clinical professionals but not because of the participation of middle managers. The more clinical professionals participated, the lesser the hospital costs were incurred.
