Next steps for nursing

Article Abstract:

'Hospitals and Health Networks' magazine and Premier Hospitals Alliance conducted a survey of 228 nurses and discovered that nurses believe their roles in the management of patient care will increase significantly by 1998. Nurses expect to become key factors in the financial survival of hospitals by becoming effective case managers who move patients through the system by means of direct courses of treatment. Nurses believe that they can reduce patient stays and make effective use of resources if they function as case managers.

Kaiser's labor pains

Article Abstract:

The contract dispute between Kaiser Permanente and the California Nurses Association (CNA) has raised issues beyond labor-management relations. CNA targets managed care as a threat to patients' health, citing instances where cost-cutting jeopardized treatment. CNA has rejected all Kaiser's contract revisions that do not permit nurses to set and enforce patient care standards.
