Open secrets: HHS proposals don't restrict police access to patient records - and some fear this invites abuse

American Health Information Management Assn executive Kathleen Frawley has warned that confidential health information has become so easy to get that companies seeking to target certain markets can easily obtain such data. Up to now, the privacy of medical records has depended on a hodgepodge of state laws. While proposals by the Dept. of Health and Human Services seeks to protect the privacy of patients, they do not restrict police access to these records, raising concerns over possible abuses.
