Options for aiding low-income medicare beneficiaries

Article Abstract:

The programs that were launched to supplement Medicare namely, the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB), Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB), and Qualified Individual (QI), have done much to ease the financial burdens of health costs on low-income Medicare members. However, the federal government has to exert great effort to extend benefits to all eligible members of the programs. The SLMB, for instance, only has 260,000 members out of a estimated 1.6 million eligibles.

Facing up to Medicare's challenges

Article Abstract:

The largest public health program in the US faces a dismal outlook in terms of financial issues while major reforms to aid these issues are expected to come up in the future. Some of these reforms include cost cutting in the private sector, moving quickly into managed care and increasing contributions by beneficiaries through cost sharing or premium contributions. Imposing reforms to aid Medicare is laborious and requires immediate attention.
