Perceived and unmet needs of critical care family members
Article Abstract:
Surveys of needs may effectively measure the degree that critical care nursing units are meeting the needs of the family members of patients. Using the Critical Care Family Needs Inventory and the Needs Met Inventory, researchers surveyed 52 family members of critically ill patients at a small community hospital. Of the top ten needs perceived by family members, four were being met by the nursing unit. They included access to the patient, information about treatment, clear progress reports, and explanations about aspects of care.

Challenges of traction in critical care: a case study
Article Abstract:
Traction is used to realign bones after fracture and maintain their proper anatomic position during healing. Traction is the application of force to a diseased part of the body, opposing gravity and the contractile force of muscles, to immobilize the injured limb and relieve pain. Patients in traction require padding to prevent skin injury, and judicious skin and wound hygiene. Immobilized patients may require prophylaxis against the complications of venous stasis.
