Psychiatric nursing: epistemological contradictions

Article Abstract:

Psychiatry ideologically and practically dominates psychiatric nursing and has done so since the practice was established late in the 19th century. Mainstream psychiatry focuses on physical treatments, which tends to contradict the humanistic approach growing in psychiatric nursing. Mainstream psychiatry has not addressed differences in class, ethnicity, and gender, while humanistic nursing includes interpersonal considerations and values patients as persons.
