Review exclusive contracts in light of recent challenges

Article Abstract:

Hospitals need to review exclusive contracts when making decisions on whether to terminate specialty services. The 1990s have seen numerous exclusive contract cases that reinstate the incumbent doctor who was denied a fair hearing or due process. Therefore, it is important that hospitals review their exclusive contracts and focus on two important issues: whether the contract is a truly 'exclusive' agreement and whether the contract allows for medical staff privileges to be revoked along with the termination of the contract.

HCFA's bundled CABG payment project yields results, insights

Article Abstract:

A pilot project to evaluate bundled pricing for Medicare services was set up in 1991 by the Health Care Financing Administration. The project provides a bundled price, combining hospital and physician fees, for coronary artery bypass graft surgery. While the financial impact on the pilot hospitals has varied, the project has caused participants to reevaluate resource consumption in an effort to increase cost efficiency while maintaining a high standard of patient care.
