Rochester: community rating = insurance access

Article Abstract:

New York State in 1992 has passed a bill requiring health insurers to community-rate groups of 50 or fewer persons. Some residents object that community-rating forces the healthy to pay for the sick, but that is the basis on which insurance is founded. In Rochester, NY, 90% of health insurance policies are community-rated, and coverage may be obtained throughout the year. Consequently, employees do not feel confined to their jobs because they fear loss of health insurance coverage. A survey reveals that only 6% of Rochester inhabitants are uninsured, compared to 14% nationwide.

Clinical pathway across tertiary and community care after an interventional cardiology procedure

Article Abstract:

A clinical pathway called "Heart Health Care Patterns" offers cardiac patients formal follow-up care and education over the course of one year and allows patients a more informative means of receiving care from a tertiary facility. Patients receiving care from tertiary hospitals often have limited access to family support and medical information. The pathway provides education and guidance following cardiac procedures and offers the service over a long period of time so patients may gain a fuller understanding of their rehabilitative care needs.
