Seeing renewed role, IS vendors align for post-reform realities
Article Abstract:
Information systems vendors are anticipating reforms in health care delivery systems and are adjusting their product focus accordingly. They expect single hospitals to fade into a system of managed care networks that will have a need for information systems that can track medical records, integrate departments and integrate networks. Companies such as TDS Healthcare Systems Corp and 3M are concentrating on development of products that will help managed care networks provide quality care at reduced costs. It is expected that intense competition will force some vendors to merge in order to survive.

Paying and delivering: insurers and providers find road to reform is a two-way street

Integration of health insurance, hospitals and physicians needs talented, dedicated leadership to succeed. A partnership called HealthSource Inc has been formed by Health Midwest and two other Kansas City, MO, hospitals with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City. Another partnership of insurers and providers, Alternative Health Delivery Systems Inc, is based in Louisville, KY. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kentucky and Baptist Healthcare System share a network with several hospitals with religious affiliations. Management and plans of both partnerships are described.

No more "business as usual" for hospitals; dramatic trends are beginning to unfold during the comprehensive reform process
Article Abstract:
The impending changes in health care financing and delivery will force hospital administrators to change business tactics or be left behind. Declining hospital margins and the resulting decreased access to capital in the markets will cause hospitals to pay a higher premium for debt capital. Acute care hospitals will decrease about 20% in the next 20 years because of the changes in financing and delivery of services.
