Shared sacrifice: the right message for America

Article Abstract:

Everyone should share the financial burden of health care reform, including hospitals. Hospitals have proven themselves to be flexible in the past, adapting to changing management priorities such as outpatient service and the need to reduce costs. In the future, hospitals will need to collaborate with other sectors of the health care industry and learn to prudently manage health care resources. If hospitals take the lead in reform, they will be able to maintain the power they need to ensure their goals of universal access and community-based health care delivery.

Networks and our next step; communicating the hospital community's vision on reform

Article Abstract:

Community care networks are gaining popularity within the health care industry as a way to control costs, conserve resources and share risks and incentives. Hospitals need to work hard to develop networks that serve their community by offering services that provide more access and better-quality health care. Hospitals can demonstrate their commitment to network care by developing health care programs with local businesses and by opening a dialogue with their communities to explore health care issues.

Capitation and reform: challenges and choices for hospital leadership

Article Abstract:

Hospitals must plan to participate in some type of capitated health care plan. For example, they may choose to become a risk-bearing partner in a health care network or only contract with such a network. In any case, hospitals should formulate a transition plan for entering into such a network and must frequently review their decisions as health care reform is implemented.
