Owned vertical integration and health care: promise and performance

Article Abstract:

Increased vertical integration in the healthcare sector are brought about by anticipated benefits like higher quality of care, reduced administrative costs, and greater coordination of services, among others. Research indicates contradictory evidence. Some recently merged companies report decreased growth and profitability as well as expanding inefficiencies within the firm. Contractual methods which may provide greater flexibility and more production sharing for opportunities are suggested to managers who are contemplating vertically integrated arrangements.

The identification and measurement of quality dimensions in health care: focus group interview results

Article Abstract:

Eleven characteristics that contribute to patient satisfaction and quality of care in hospitals were determined in the health care industry as a result of interviews with patients, doctors and administrators. These factors are tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, competence, courtesy, communication, access, understanding customer, caring, patient outcomes and collaboration. Differences were observed on how the three groups of people interviewed perceived the relative importance of these values.

Fulcrum for the future: the creation of a values-drive culture

Article Abstract:

The leaders of the Health Hill Hospital for Children in Ohio launched the Values Project to help the hospital weather the effects of restructuring in the health care industry. The hospital's chief executive officer believed that establishing a set of core values would promote stability and align the goals of the hospital and staff which is essential to future success. The development of the project are discussed.
