Smoking cessation and health: a comment

Article Abstract:

The summation of Andrew Jones that good health develops an inducement for smokers to cease smoking is challenged. The specification of the rough prototype and an inadequacy of suitable data may have concealed the real relationship between health and smoking cessation. An empirical illustration reveals that smokers who recently quit, at least among the elderly, did so due to poor health.

Smoking cessation and health: a response

Article Abstract:

The findings in Jones' 1984-85 Health and Lifestyle Survey (HALS1) about the relationship between smoking cessation and health are strengthened by new valuations from the longitudinal follow-up to the HALS2. This would address the possible problems raised by Shmueli regarding the usage of measures of present health and by the exclusion of past health.
