Successfully managing managed care: organizational skills needed by hospitals to compete in an era of managed care

Article Abstract:

The changing political, financial and social environment has various implications on the management of managed care organizations and hospitals. To be successful in competing within the managed care system, hospital administrators need to develop strategic management approaches which include the promotion of hospital-medical staff relations, quality impovement, contract negotiations and administration, as well as enhance financial and information management skills. Such reorganization is necessary if they want to survive in an era of increasing financial instability.

Managed care is limited by the information system

Article Abstract:

Managed care providers need an efficient and well-designed management information system which will provide accurate and reliable data to managed care organizations such as providers and recipients of care as well as some regulatory authorities. To accomplish such an objective, an assessment of the information needs of the business organization itself, the management and the health care consumers is of prime importance. In addition, managed care providers need to decide between decentralization and centralization to detrmine future actions.

Economic credentialing

Article Abstract:

Hospital administrators have considered the role of economic credentialing in the development of an economical and efficient utilization of hospital resources. This type of review establishes dependency on physician practice patterns as determinants of economic viability for the hospital. Although some sectors consider economic credentialing as a usurpation of medical staff's value and a parallel of exclusive contracting, it is shown that such biases are unfounded.
