Surfing the Net for a health plan

Article Abstract:

Healtheon Corp plans to offer, by fall 1996, Internet services that will allow communication between employers, healthcare providers and employees. The service is intended to make benefits management more manageable for employers and make it easier for employees to make an informed decision about their healthcare options. Headed by Jim Clark, who was influential in the development of Netscape Navigator, Healtheon is competing against several other companies to be the first to develop such a service.

The right to appeal: it's both flash point and pivot point of consumer protections under managed care

Article Abstract:

The Texas law that allows patients to sue their health plans to recover money spent for health services denied by the plans does not exist in many states. The current situation allows health plans to say no to a treatment, and patients often do not have any avenue for recourse. Kaiser Family Foundation official Larry Levitt, however, notes that giving patients somewhere to go for redress restores trust in the healthcare system.

Forward motion on medical advances

Article Abstract:

The US Department of Defense has agreed to increase spending on experimental cancer treatments. The program extends to military personnel and family members eligible for clinical trials sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. Clinical researchers believe the Department of Defense's committment to experimental treatments will prompt health insurance agencies and health maintenance organizations to initiate similar programs.
