Tallahassee Memorial: focusing the culture on customer service

Article Abstract:

Tallahassee Memorial Regional Medical Center (TMRMC) aims to become the ideal high-quality, low-cost health-care provider. TMRMC is utilizing a grant to implement Russell Ackoff's interactive planning and management model. The method includes visualization of the ideal unit, assessment of current conditions, gap identification, and change prioritization. CEO Duncan Moore uses two rules - planning boards must include anyone affected by the plan, and the boards must find the resources to fulfill any plan. TMRMC employees' new perspective is to work for the patients, rather than for other hospital employees.

ASHHRA/OMNI labor survey: significant union activity in pre-petition stages

Article Abstract:

A survey conducted by the American Hospital Association's American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration and the Omni Group labor consulting firm determined that pre-petition stage unionization activity was more extensive during summer 1991 than government data had indicated. The survey results suggest that union activity in hospitals could increase nationwide, especially as economic recovery progresses and workers become more willing to risk their jobs. Information on how hospital administrators can avert union campaigns is provided.

MAP: matching care-givers to patient needs

Article Abstract:

The University of Utah Hospital's Multi-disciplinary Apprentice Program improved patient care by freeing nurses of lower-level duties, allowing them time to devote to neglected areas such as patient education. The program trains apprentices as general healthcare workers, but offers tuition assistance for those who wish to enter professional or technical education programs. Apprentices are recruited from nontraditional groups: recent high school graduates, people over 40, minorities and displaced workers.
